Ukraine bans entry of foreign nationals starting from August 28 to restrain COVID-19 spread

Updated: Jan 23, 2021

Adaptive quarantine in Ukraine has been extended until October 31. This decision was made by the Cabinet of Ministers today, August 26. The Minister of Health Maxim Stepanov noted that the document provides for strengthening several restrictive measures.

  • "Quarantine in Ukraine is extended until October 31, 2020. Restrictive measures in the regions are also intensifying. The decision is due to a sharp increase in the number of cases of coronavirus disease. We need to understand that we are all in a new reality, and it dictates new rules and the need to adhere to security measures strictly, "said the head of the Ministry of Health.

Ukraine's regions will still be divided into green, yellow, orange, and red levels of severity of the spread of COVID-19. However, starting on September 1, the government will tighten the quarantine restrictions in regions with a "green" level of epidemic danger. Will be prohibited discos, nightclubs, catering activities, and holding concerts (except for those held by cultural institutions, for which concert activities during the last year are the main activity).

The Minister of Health also noted that the document gives local governments the right to access the data of the electronic service "Action at home" - for the current control of persons subject to self-isolation or observation and persons who violated the rules of quarantine.

To be officially published on August 27, Ukraine will close its borders to foreign citizens for a month starting on August 28, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal announced during today's government meeting. The ban will last until September 28.

Exceptions to the ban:

Foreigners with temporary or permanent residency permits and refugees will be exempt from the ban.

The ban also will not apply to citizens invited to the country by Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs or members of diplomatic missions and international organizations.

Cargo drivers, airplane cabin crews, and patients who come to Ukraine for treatment are still allowed to cross the border. Students of Ukrainian universities, athletes, and cultural workers who have an invitation from Ukrainian institutions will also be allowed.

According to the Prime Minister of Ukraine, in some cases, it will be at Ukraine's State Border Guard Service officers to decide on whether to allow foreigners into the country.
