Mezhyhirya Residence
Museum
For palace and park lovers, we recommend visiting the residence of former president Viktor Yanukovych in Mezhyhirya. This is a new tourist thing to do in Kyiv as the area was closed to the visitors till 2014.
There one can see helipad, boxing ring, inner road for high-speed driving, golf field, zoo, place to pasture horses, pheasant farm, trout pond and lotus, garage for 70 cars, pier with yachts.
Mezhyhirya became popular thanks to the interest to the Yanukovych house, but the history of this place is very interesting and ancient.
Before 1935 there was Mezhyhirya Monastery. After capital transfer of the USSR’s from Kharkiv to Kyiv in 1934 appeared necessity of government residence outside the city. Mezhyhirya location was chosen for this purpose. Before the demolition of the buildings of the monastery complex were photographed. In April 1935 Politburo issued a decree on the destruction of the entire complex, which was performed in the same year. During the demolition of a collection of manuscripts was discovered underground. It has been suggested that the books were found from the lost library of Yaroslav the Wise or the later period – the era of Zaporizhia Army. Only the well has remained from the monastery complex. During Soviet times it was the residence of S. Kosior, Nikita Khrushchev and Shcherbytsky. Location has been hidden from the public. Stalin and Brezhnev also stayed here during Kyiv visit.
